Rhyme. For a Change.

As a coach, I often hear all kinds of stuff

From clients who never think their life is “enough”.

They want their lives to be a “success” in every way –

And they aren’t happy with the way things aren’t going today!

Sometimes they think coaching will be a place to go –

To sit around and share their tales of woe…

But I know that if they show up here,

It’s because they want help to challenge their gloom, shame and fear!

They need to interrupt their unhealthy patterns of thought,

Because the results of their current thinking are not so hot!

Our thoughts are way more powerful than scientists used to know –

They can determine if our energy levels are high or low!

Neuro-science is now explaining why it is true,

That our self-talk affects how we feel, and what we can do!

We all know how to assume the posture of someone who is feeling down,

And we feel better when we smile, and worse when we frown.

It’s actually pretty amazing that anyone would find –

That a connection is lacking between the body and the mind!

So when you notice that you are not feeling too great –

Have you just been thinking about something you love or you hate?

We all know how to imagine worst-case scenarios –

A sure way to increase our worries and our woes!

Why not imagine the best outcome instead –

And grow some positive neuro-transmitters inside your head?

Some people call me a dreamer, and suggest that I get real –

But living in their reality seems like a terrible deal!

And guess what – negative thinking does not just bring you pain –

It turns out to be very bad for the health of your brain!

Rhyme. For a Change.

I wrote a kids’ book that parents felt really rang true –

And all my friends said: “Hey – we need one too!”

You see, it’s about learning how to make peace with fear –

With some strategies that everyone seems happy to hear.

About the kinds of limitations we all face every day –

And how we can be open to possibility as we navigate our way.

Learning to accept our fear, and deciding to be brave –

Seeing obstacles as opportunities, so we are less likely to cave!

Since you never know where an idea might lead…

I hope you take something away from what you read.

I watched Brandon and Chase Jarvis in an interview –

And suddenly I knew exactly what I had to do!

When inspiration hits, I never ask why,

I just get grateful and excited… and give it a try!

Brandon started out doing what he loved every day,

And it has become a rewarding experience in every way!

Check out Humans of New York on his amazing Facebook page –

His wonderful photos and stories are all the rage!

So I thought about a way I love to communicate –

That puts me into a joyful and productive state…

Rhyming couplets have always been so much fun for me,

And they seem to get the point across quite easily!

As a long-time life coach I learn so much every day,

And I know I can help more people in a broader way…

My rhyming blog will be the adult version of my book –

With a lot to think about – so please take a look!

The Practice of Compassion

I watch a lot of TED Talks…most of them, all the way through because i am interested, intrigued, entertained…

I rarely take notes. But, there are certain TED Talks that compel me to sit very still, listen intently…and write stuff down.

Buddhist roshi, Joan Halifax’s talk on Compassion made me realize why.

I knew that what she was saying was profoundly important. I knew that her perspective could have a strong positive impact on my life. And, I knew that as much as I appreciated her words, and I wanted to be able to fully understand and live them — I didn’t quite get it. Not yet.

According to Joan Halifax, compassion is something we all have the ability and the need to practice (like meditation, yoga, non-judgment…you never finish practicing.) And, as we do, although we will feel the suffering of others more keenly as we aspire to do our part to transform it, we are not attached to the outcome so we return to our baseline of balance more quickly.

The idea is to care deeply enough about others to not suffer because they are. Because if we join them in their suffering, we are not in a position to help. And, it is not possible to suffer enough to make someone else suffer less. No matter how much we love them.

So, it seems to me that compassion is so powerful because it allows us to feel good and spread that around — no matter what.

Yup, still practicing. With intention. One day at a time.
